<image:title>Research - The Margaret Bamberger Research and Education Center</image:title>
<image:caption>For over 50 years, Selah Bamberger Ranch Preserve has been a showcase habitat restoration project with a strong educational mission. For more than 30 years, the ranch has been used as an outdoor classroom for students and landowners. The Margaret Bamberger Research and Education Center, completed in 2018, serves as a research and education facility on the ranch. This building provides state-of-the-art technology and is unparalleled in terms of its capacity to provide a unique experience for students, visitors, and researchers. J. David Bamberger is one of Texas’ greatest conservation heroes because of his inspiring vision and commitment to restoration and sound land stewardship of Selah, Bamberger Ranch Preserve. J. David’s late wife, Margaret, acted as the catalyst and muse for the educational programs that have benefitted tens of thousands of students and visitors to the ranch over the years. We honor her legacy with this one-of-a-kind research and education building that continues to inspire visitors from all backgrounds.</image:caption>

<image:caption>April holds a PhD in Environment and Resources from the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. April’s dissertation focused on the intersection of community-based conservation and rural development and how these disciplines can be combined to empower local people to be stewards of their own landscape. April holds a M.S. in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development, also from the Nelson Institute. For this degree, her research focused on women’s groups in rural Bolivia and their participation in natural resource management decision-making. Before graduate school, April lived in the Philippines for over three years, first as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer and then as a Community Organizer for the Philippines program of Conservation International. April led environmental education programs for a local non-profit organization, and she worked with an indigenous group of people on Coron Island that had just received legal rights over their ancestral land and water. She coordinated a conservation enterprise project, which focused on the processing of cashews by the local people. April has a B.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology from the Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences Department of Texas A&M University. Before coming to Selah, Bamberger Ranch Preserve as Executive Director, April most recently served as Executive Director of an international community-based conservation organization based in Wisconsin.</image:caption>

<image:title>Steven Fulton - Steven Fulton Ranch Manager</image:title>
<image:caption>Steven grew up on a 150-acre vegetable farm in Falls County, Texas where he learned many life lessons and the value of a long day’s work. He graduated from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a B.S. in Biology. Steven brings a background in all aspects of ranching, field biology, and land surveying with him. His former position as a biologist for The Nature Conservancy included mapping Black-capped Vireo habitat and operating as their Oak Wilt Specialist. Steven came to the ranch through a connection to the BRP Board of Directors’ Botanical Advisor, who happened to also be Steven’s supervisor at the Nature Conservancy. Steven was hired in 2003 and started out as a Stewardship Coordinator and Science Educator. Now, as the Ranch Manager, Steven’s main role is to oversee the management of the 5,500 acres of land that comprises the BRP. This includes managing wildlife as well as coordinating our hunting program. Steven also manages the upkeep of ranch infrastructures and assists with “people ranching” in our educational programs and tours. Steven is blessed to reside on the ranch with his wife of 18 years, Amanda, their 15 year-old son, Aiden, and their 9 year-old daughter, Emrie.</image:caption>

<image:title>J. David Bamberger - J. David Bamberger Founder & Chairman Emeritus</image:title>
<image:caption>J. David Bamberger was born into poverty in rural Massillon, Ohio in 1928. The circumstances of growing up in poverty partly shaped Mr. Bamberger’s outlook on life and introduced him to relying on nature and the world around him. Though the larger part in shaping Mr. Bamberger’s love for the natural world comes from his mother, Hester. She introduced him to a love for nature and for reading at an early age. Hester gifted Mr. Bamberger with the book that would influence his life so heavily, Louis Bromfield’s Pleasant Valley. Bromfield narrates his tale of restoring his degraded family farm to its once natural splendor. This story of habitat restoration always stuck with Mr. Bamberger and was the inspiration behind his seeking the worst piece of land in Blanco County. In 1969, Mr. Bamberger found this piece of land we now know as the Selah, Bamberger Ranch Preserve. It took Mr. Bamberger over 25 years of toil and trial to achieve his vision of what the BRP could be. He struggled with invasive plants, an abused and neglected landscape and mistaken conventional wisdom. He persisted. Today he generously shares the lessons he learned along the way to all who visit the BRP. The reality is that it takes resources, commitment, and patience to restore a natural space to its closest-possible original health and abundance. In the words of Mr. Bamberger: “Do not initiate an action you are not willing, or capable of sustaining.” Mr. Bamberger’s vision of restoring and protecting the land evolved into a vision which guaranteed to protect these restored lands in perpetuity, which has become increasingly important given the current reality of fragmentation and development of the landscape in central Texas. His desire to protect the BRP in perpetuity inspired him and his late wife, Margaret in 2002 to create the nonprofit organization that runs the reserve and its programs. This vision is an expansion of his life-long work to restore and protect the BRP. The detailed story of Mr. Bamberger’s path to the BRP can be found in the book Water from Stone, which details Mr. Bamberger’s journey from poverty to entrepreneurial success to conservation hero.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - Restoring, Preserving, Educating</image:title>
<image:caption>Selah, Bamberger Ranch Preserve is a 5,500-acre ranch in Blanco County that has been restored to its original habitat. Our mission is to teach ethical land stewardship by example and outreach. We offer seminars for landowners and serve as a research lab for botanists, zoologists, and other scientists. We provide hands-on science classes and nature camps for school children — 2,000 children in a typical year. Our public tours and workshops attract land stewards, birdwatchers, photographers, and animal and plant enthusiasts. After leaving the Ranch, many visitors are inspired to change consumption habits and better conserve natural resources. They leave with a vision of harmony with the land. They realize that the ranch tells a story of hope: given the chance, nature can heal itself. Nature can heal us.</image:caption>

<image:title>Kayla Krueger - Kayla Krueger Education Program Manager</image:title>
<image:caption>With a biologist father and a teacher mother, it’s no surprise that Kayla found herself in environmental education. Hunting and fishing provided the space for her to explore her curiosity of all things natural. Kayla attended Texas A&M University where she studied Wildlife and Fisheries Science. Her degree emphasis of fisheries ecology took her to the mangrove estuaries of Utila, Honduras. Kayla’s experiences through her studies of the mangroves and outreach to the local people shifted her path from curious scientist to enthusiastic educator. After college, Kayla worked as a conservation educator for Texas Wildlife Association serving the schools and communities of South Houston and the surrounding counties. She later acquired her teaching certification and taught 7th and 8th grade science for 6 years. While teaching in Fredericksburg, Kayla was introduced to the ranch through volunteering with the Texas Youth Hunting Program. She came back from that first trip inspired and in love (as most people do.) Kayla was working for San Antonio Parks and Recreation as an education coordinator when she received a call that a position opened up at Bamberger Ranch. It was a “no-brainer.” She applied for the position immediately. Kayla manages the education programs at the ranch. Coordinating school trips and creating curriculum are her core responsibilities; she also assists with ranch tours and workshops and manages the ranch’s social media pages.</image:caption>

<image:title>Drew Neyland - Drew Neyland Research Coordinator</image:title>
<image:caption>Growing up on a cattle ranch in Central Texas, Drew developed a passion for land stewardship and studying native wildlife. He holds a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from Texas State University and a M.S. in biology from Sam Houston State University. While earning these degrees, Drew became fascinated with the methods and field techniques used in wildlife research. He has worked with various species of animals, including his thesis work studying beavers in East Texas. Drew’s first visit to Bamberger Ranch Preserve was in 2019 when he joined the team for a seasonal internship immediately after graduating from Texas State. That internship experience helped him to grow as a naturalist and further prepare him for a career in natural resources. After his internship, he left to pursue his M.S. and then worked as a biologist for the Texas Military Department managing wildlife on military lands. Drew joined the staff full time in 2023 as Research Coordinator. His role at BRP is to facilitate and conduct research activities on the ranch and grow partnerships with organizations, universities, and other researchers interested in working with BRP. In addition to this, he assists with both the education program and management activities. Shortly after returning to BRP as a full-time employee, Drew welcomed a baby boy. Drew now lives on the ranch with his wife and son.</image:caption>
