Hes' Country Store
Hes' Country Store, a rustic replica of a Texas country store, was built by Mr. Bamberger as a meeting
spot and as a "museum" in honor of his mother Hester. It serves as a display
site for his "inheritance", which consists of items from his mother's home.
During his childhood in Ohio, his mother had a great influence on him, teaching
him about nature and good environmental stewardship. She introduced him to
the writings of Louis Bromfield, giving him the book, "Pleasant Valley",
which chronicles the habitat restoration of the "farmed out" land Mr. Bromfield
bought in Ohio. Louis' life and work planted the seed that led Mr. Bamberger
to buy Selah, which was a rocky, "ranched out", cedar covered property, where
he put into action his plan to turn it into a model of good stewardship.
Hes' Country Store is frequently included in educational tours to emphasize
the importance of family and cultural conservation.
We invite you to leave the comfort and insulation of the city and join us for a natural experience. This replica of a real Texas country store can comfortably sleep 4 people in bunk beds in the back room, and a few more can be added. There is a shower in the bathroom. An electric cooking range and sink are hidden under the counter, and a refrigerator is in the back room so you can fix meals. Simple but adequate utensils and pots are provided for cooking and serving meals. During cold weather heat is provided by an old fashioned wood stove. There is no air conditioning, but breezes are common even in the summer. Towels and linens are furnished but you handle your own food service. When you book Hes' Country Store you have access to 5000 acres for hiking, fishing, and nature watching. A ranch tour is not included in the price. Staff availability is limited but a tour can possibly be arranged for an additional fee. Please make these arrangements well in advance of your arrival.
